'Yearning to Breathe Free: Steve Cavallo'

Paris Koh Fine Arts is proud to present a Solo Exhibition 'Yearning to Breathe Free: Steve Cavallo'. The show will run from August 1 -15, 2022 with an opening reception on Friday, August 5th from 6-8pm.

​

Steven Cavallo is a watercolor artist who grew up in New Jersey. Since graduating from the School of Visual Arts in 1979 (where he later taught life drawing from 2015-2019), his art has been exhibited worldwide in museums, art galleries and reproduced in books, magazines and newspapers for over four decades. He works in a style that might be called dramatic realism. The human figure is a defining element in his work, as stories of real people's lives are told with pathos and joy. 

 

Recent exhibitions include Looking Back, Seeing Ahead a solo exhibit collaborating with the National Park Services at Manzanar National Historic Site in California, Collateral Damage at John Jay College of Criminal Justice NYC, Darkness at the Break of Noon at Gallery d’Atre in Manhattan, Forgotten Faces at the Fullerton Museum in California, and There But for Fortune (solo exhibition) at Eunnam Museum in Gwangju, South Korea. In 2020 he received the Greg Theiman Award for his painting A Distant Melody from Watercolor USA in the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri.  

 

Over the years his work has focused on Human Rights issues including Comfort Women, Japanese Internment Camps and Holocaust survivors.  He designed and was part of the team responsible for installing the first Comfort Women Memorial on Public land which is in Palisades Park NJ.  

His new work focuses on freedom and the American Dream.  These new paintings consist of large panels depicting people in search of a new life and others who fight to maintain a normal existence living in a land that was taken from their ancestors. 

This series of paintings is titled YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE, borrowing a line from poet Emma Lazarus’ THE NEW COLISSUS. In this series we see depicted oversized portraits of Central American refugees struggling for a new life side by side with portraits of Native Americans who have had their land taken from them.

수채화 작품으로 친숙한 Steven Cavallo는 뉴져지에서 나고 자란 예술가이다. 1979년 School of Visual Arts를 졸업한 이후(2015-2019년에 라이프 드로잉을 가르쳤음) 그의 작품들은 40년 넘게 여러 박물관, 미술관에 전시되었으며 책, 잡지 및 신문에 보도 되어왔다. 그의 작품들은 사실주의라고 볼 수 있는데, 실제 사람들의 삶에 대한 이야기가 슬픔과 기쁨으로 전해지기 때문에 인간 본연의 모습들은 그의 작업에서 중요한 요소이며 주제이기도 하다

 

수년 동안 그는 위안부, 일본 수용소 및 홀로코스트 생존자를 포함한 인권 문제에 중점을 둔 작업들을 발표해 왔으며, 또한 뉴져지 팰리사이드팍에 있는 공공 부지에 최초의 위안부 기념관을 설치하는 책임을 맡은 팀의 일원이자 팰리사이드팍 도서관 앞에 소녀상을 세우는데 앞장선 장본인 이기도 하다.

 

이번 전시에 소개되는 그의 새로운 작업들은 자유와 아메리칸 드림에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이 시리즈는 새로운 삶을 찾는 사람들과, 빼앗긴 땅에서 정상적인 삶을 유지하기 위해 투쟁하는 사람들을 묘사한 대형 패널로 구성되었다. 특히, 이 그림 시리즈는 시인 Emma Lazarus의 THE NEW COLISSUS에서 한 구절을 빌린 YEARNING TO BREATH FREE라는 제목을 붙였다. 이 시리즈로 구성된 이번 전시에서 우리는 새로운 삶을 위해 고군분투하는 중앙 아메리카 난민의 대형 초상화와 땅을 빼앗긴 아메리카 원주민의 초상화를 함께 소개한다

 

​스티브 카발로의 최근 주요 전시로는 캘리포니아 만자나르 국립 사적지(Manzanar National Historic Site)에서 국립 공원국(National Park Services)과 공동으로 작업한 개인전 ‘뒤돌아보기,앞서 보기’(Looking Back, Seeing Ahead), 뉴욕 존제이대학 미술관(John Jay College of Criminal Justice NYC) 그룹전 ‘부수적 피해’(Collateral Damage), 맨해튼 첼시의 갤러리 디아르떼(Gallery d'Atre) 개인전 ‘정오의 어둠’(Darkness at the Break of Noon), 캘리포니아 플레튠 뮤지움(Fullerton Museum in California)의 ‘잊혀진 얼굴’ (Forgotten Faces), 그리고 광주 은남 미술관 개인전’There But for Fortune’ 등이있다. 2020년 수채화 USA에서 그린 그의 작품 ‘A Distant Melody’로 미주리주 스프링필드 미술관에서 수여하는 그렉 테이먼 상을 받은바 있다.
